Spring cleaning without wasting water: Simple tips to save more

Spring is here, which means it’s time for a big refresh! But did you know that traditional cleaning methods often waste significant amount of water? Don’t worry, spring cleaning doesn’t have to be wasteful. With a few simple swaps, you can keep your home fresh while saving water.

1. Switch to a bucket instead of running water

When washing floors, windows, or even your car, avoid leaving the tap or hose running continuously . Instead, fill a bucket with just the right amount of water you need. This simple swap can save litres of water with every clean!

2. Use a spray bottle for wiping surfaces

Instead of soaking sponges or cloths under a running tap, fill a reusable spray bottle with a mix of water and eco-friendly cleaner. You’ll use less water while still making your surfaces shine.

3. Reuse water where you can

While waiting for your shower to warm up, collect the cold water in a container. You can latertransfer it to a spray bottle for cleaning!

4. Ditch the hose, use a broom instead

Cleaning your driveway, patio or front steps? Ditch the hose andpick up a broom instead. Sweeping up leaves and dirt saves water and does the job just as well! Alternatively, for extra mucky spaces, use a bucket instead of a hose.

5. Be water conscious when washing clothes and linen

Spring cleaning often means washing curtains, rugs, and winter clothes, but washing machines can use a lot of water. Be mindful with these tips:

  • Run full loads whenever possible.
  • Use the eco mode or water-saving setting if available.
  • Spot-clean stains instead of washing the entire item.

6. Freshen up your home without water

Not all cleaning needs water! Open windows for fresh air, sprinkle baking soda on carpets before vacuuming to remove odours, and use microfiber cloths for dusting instead of wet wipes.

Decluttering and donating old clothes or home furnishings is a fantastic way to keep your hspace tidy while giving pre-loved items a second life – a win-win for both your home and the environment.

The benefits of spring cleaning

Breathe easier & stay healthy – A clean home means less dust, mould, and pet hair, which can trigger allergies and affect your breathing. Keeping things fresh supports a healthier immune system.

Boost your mood & focus – Studies show that clutter can increase stress and evencontribute to feelings of anxiety or depression. A tidy space helps you feel more relaxed and makes it easier to concentrate - perfect if you work from home!

Keep your home safe – A cluttered home can lead to bumps, trips, and falls. Keeping walkways clear reduces the risk of injury, especially in busy areas like hallways and staircases.

Say goodbye to unwanted guests – Bugs and rodents love messy spaces. Regular cleaning and sanitising help keep them away and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Find hidden treasures – You’d be surprised how many lost items turn up during a deep clean, whether it’s that missing sock, a favourite book, or even some extra change!
