If your development site has a public water main, you might need to make changes to allow your project to move forward. If there's a water main or related equipment on your land, you have the right to request changes or removal to support your development plans, known as a Water Mains Diversion. This right, granted by Section 185 of the WIA91, also applies to adjacent land where water mains might impede progress. Note that building over water mains or related equipment is not allowed.
You can apply for a diversion of an existing water main using our application form, please complete the sections relevant to your development.
At the beginning of the application you will be asked a couple of questions on type of quote and customer to determine the type of application that you need. If you are unsure whether a diversion is required surrounding your works, please apply for a Free Budget Estimate so we can determine this for you.

Developer Diversion Pre-Development Application

- Submit your Developer Diversions Pre-Development application on My Development Portal by selecting "I need a Mains Diversion" and selecting the type of quote is Budget Estimate & type of customer is Developer. Please include detailed plans of your proposed works, your AutoCAD plan (in DWG format) including site boundary, Line & Levels during and after works, and any information on trial holes undertaken so that we can determine if a diversion is required.
- We will confirm we have everything needed or request further information to answer your enquiry within 5 calendar days of receiving your application.
- After receiving the full and complete information we will send you a response within 21 calendar days which Includes a map of our apparatus and a budget quote.

Please include a location map showing the required diversion, your AutoCAD plan (in DWG format) of your works including site boundary, Line & Levels during and after works, and any information on trial holes undertaken.
- We will confirm we have everything needed or request further information to answer your enquiry within 5 calendar days of receiving your application.
- We will send the design and cost within 42 calendar days from receipt of full and complete application.

- After your acceptance and payment is received, a designated Liaison Engineer will be in contact to arrange a prestart meeting where we will discuss our requirements and confirm the installation date.
- Following your pre-start meeting, we will programme your works to be completed within 90 calendar days of payment or later if requested.
- Make your site ready for installation and ensure the relevant machine is available to support with the installation.
- Ahead of the planned installation date of the new water main, we will attend and inspect your site to ensure it is ready for our works.
Developer Diversion Delivery

- Once satisfactory results are obtained, we will attend and complete the final connection and abandonment of the old main.
- On completion of works, a walk off will be completed with all parties.
