We all know water is important, but did you know we’re using too much of it? As climate change affects our planet, it’s becoming more important than ever to save water. To help tackle this, Affinity Water has created the Water Smart Education Programme. This programme is designed to teach kids why saving water is crucial and how we can all help protect our planet's water for the future.
Why We Need to Save Water
Imagine you’re brushing your teeth, and you leave the tap running the whole time—that's about 6 litres of water wasted every minute! Water is something we use every day, but it’s not unlimited. In fact, Affinity Water serves an area where each person uses about 157 litres of water daily, which is 17 litres more than the national average! That's like leaving a full bucket of water unused every day, per person! The Water Smart Programme aims to teach young people how small changes in their daily habits can make a big difference.
What’s the Water Smart Education Programme?
The Water Smart Education Programme is a fun and interactive way to learn about water conservation. Since it launched last year, over 130 schools have joined in, showing that many students are eager to learn how they can save water.
This year, the programme is getting even better! New lessons are being added to show how hidden leaks, like dripping taps or faulty toilets, waste huge amounts of water without us even realising. And guess what? It’s not just about water companies fixing leaks—it’s about teaching children how to spot and stop leaks in their home or school too.
How Do The Kids Learn?
The programme includes loads of cool things like assembly presentations, lesson plans for teachers, and even a fun competition where kids can show off what they've learned. Last year, students took part in a poster competition, creating designs to remind everyone about saving water. The winning design was featured on a giant digital van that travelled around the region, and the winning school got a special water-saving garden!
This year, the competition is coming back, and we’re excited to see even more creative posters showing ways to save water. Imagine seeing your design up on a billboard or shared on social media!
Simple Tips to Save Water
While the Water Smart Programme is great for schools, you can start saving water at home right now. Here are a few easy tips:
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
- Shorten your shower time by 2 minutes.
- Fix leaky taps or toilets—a small drip can waste a lot of water over time.
- Use a watering can for plants instead of a hose to save water.
- Fill up the washing machine or dishwasher before running it to avoid wasting water.
What’s Next?
Affinity Water is planning to expand the Water Smart programme even more, bringing the message of water conservation to more schools and communities. By learning how to save water now, you’re helping to make sure there’s enough for future generations.
Water is one of the most important resources we have, and everyone, even kids, can make a big difference. The more you learn about saving water, the more you can help protect the environment and make sure there’s enough water for everyone in the future.
