Recycle Week celebrates the importance of recycling while highlighting its positive impact on the environment. This year’s theme is all about rescuing recyclable items from ending up in general waste. We work hard to ensure our waste is segregated properly and we recycle as much as we can (including food), but here are some things you might not know we do to reduce waste at Affinity Water!
Reducing packaging from deliveries
We know packaging can be a significant source of waste. That’s why we’re working with RS Components to reduce unnecessary packaging from our deliveries of electrical tools and components by combining orders. All packaging used is recyclable and made with 50% recycled content.
You can do your bit by choosing companies that are committed to reducing waste through sustainable packaging and sorting your waste correctly at home.
The power of reuse
We recently held a “swap shop” event to support Oxfam’s Second-Hand September campaign. The event gave staff the opportunity to bring in their pre-loved clothing or books and swap them for something that caught their eye. This year the charity focused on fashion’s impact on the planet’s water resources and raised awareness of how our shopping choices can dramatically reduce this.

A second life for PPE
PPE is essential for safeguarding health, but once it’s no longer needed, it’s crucial to ensure it doesn’t harm the environment. We recycle used textiles, hi-vis gear, boots, gloves, and safety goggles. Instead of sending these items to landfill, we partner with SMI to ensure they’re recycled responsibly so the plastics and metals can be reused, and the gloves are processed into rubberized powder to be used for playground surfaces.
You could encourage your workplace or school to step up its recycling efforts by organising a recycling challenge or offering eco-friendly alternatives to single-use items.
