10 Sneaky signs you have a leak in your home

Leaks can be tricky to spot, but if left unchecked, they can waste water, damage your home, and increase your bills. At Affinity Water, we’re here to help you spot your home leaks!

Here are 10 signs that you might have a leak - and how you can take action.

1. Unexplained High Water Bills

If your water bill suddenly spikes without a change in your usage habits, it’s time to investigate. A hidden leak could be to blame.

2. Damp or Discoloured Patches

Look for damp spots on walls, ceilings, or floors. Even a small discoloration could mean water is escaping somewhere it shouldn’t.

3. Low Water Pressure

Noticing weaker water flow in your taps or shower? A hidden leak could be reducing the water pressure.

4. Constantly Running Meter

Check your water meter. If it’s moving when no water is being used, it’s a strong indicator of a leak.

5. Mould or Mildew

Persistent mould or mildew growth, even in well-ventilated areas, could point to a hidden water source feeding it.

6. Strange Sounds

Listen for the sound of running water or dripping when no taps are on. This could be water escaping from a hidden pipe.

7. Unpleasant Smells

A musty or earthy smell might mean water is pooling behind walls or under floors, creating the perfect environment for bacteria and mould.

8. Cracks in Walls or Floors

Leaks can weaken structural materials, causing cracks to form over time. Don’t dismiss these as normal wear and tear.

9. Wobbly or Damaged Fixtures

If taps, toilets, or other fixtures seem loose or are showing signs of rust, there could be a leak at the connection point.

10. Frozen pipes

During the winter, pipes can freeze, which can lead to bursts in your home. You can investigate for a frozen pipe by checking the water flow from your taps. If you have no water or only a trickle, it may be a telltale sign of a frozen pipe. Listen out for any unusual sounds from your plumbing system, as strange noises can often indicate underlying issues.

How to Perform the Look and Listen Test

Finding a leak early can save you money and hassle.

Try this quick test:

Look: Inspect your home for any of the signs above. Pay attention to areas near pipes, appliances, and your garden.

Listen: Turn off all taps and listen carefully. If you hear water running or dripping, there’s likely a leak.
